Summer, 1959. Claire, pregnant and abandoned by her husband, leaves her young son Louis with family friends Marcelle and Pelo. The Parisian boy must adapt to life in the countryside and the peculiar tension that lingers in the couple’s home, fractured by a dark secret. Louis’s arrival becomes a chance for renewal.
This autobiographical film, emblematic of heartfelt and humanistic cinema, was an unexpected critical and commercial success upon its 1987 release. Through Louis’s wide-eyed, sometimes frightened perspective, the film offers a nostalgic yet unidealized view of a rural village at the end of the 1950s. The clash between urban life and the raw simplicity of the countryside unfolds as an initiation story, where a boy learns about life, death, and sexuality through childhood games.
Anémone and Richard Bohringer deliver a touching portrayal of a broken couple, while young Vanessa Guedj is another standout in this timeless rediscovery.
